Quarra Stone is honored to be featured in Bloomberg Businessweek’s recent story on the future of stone sculpture and digital craftsmanship. The article, “Meet the Marble Carving Robots Making Modern-Day Michelangelos,” explores how robotic fabrication is reshaping one of the world’s oldest artistic traditions and highlights the work Quarra is doing in Pietrasanta, Italy, to help lead that transformation.

For centuries, Pietrasanta has been a hub of classical stonework, drawing sculptors from around the globe to work in the same marble used by Michelangelo. Today, that legacy continues—not just through hand carving, but also through high-precision robotics, CNC technology, and a new generation of digital artists and fabricators.

At Quarra, we see this convergence of old and new as essential to the future of monumental sculpture. Our satellite studio in Pietrasanta, developed in collaboration with Cervietti Studio, serves as a digital workshop where artists, architects, and institutions can prototype, scale, and realize their ideas in stone with speed, accuracy, and respect for the craft.

As founder Jim Durham told Bloomberg, “We’re not replacing the artist. We’re giving them new tools.” That’s been our guiding principle in global projects—from major public art commissions to museum replicas and sacred architecture. Our hybrid process—combining robotic milling, advanced metrology, and artisan hand-finishing—makes it possible to realize complex works that would otherwise be cost- or time-prohibitive.

We’re proud to be part of a movement that doesn’t just honor tradition but actively evolves it. The Bloomberg feature affirms the growing recognition of this space—and our role within it—as essential to how stone continues to shape culture, place, and history.
